What is Community Wealth Building?

Community wealth building (CWB) seeks to transform local economies by redirecting wealth back into the community, ensuring that local people have stakein the economic resources generated in their area. This approach emphasizes the importance of local ownership, equitable access to resources, and the
development of community-led enterprises. It's rooted in the belief that economic systems should serve the needs of the community, not external interests.
Why Now?

The Malvern community is facing significant changes.

In 2022, the City of Toronto received a development application from the mall owner, real estate investment and property management company Davpart Inc. to redevelop the Malvern Town Centre lands. The original plan proposed to build 15 towers containing more than 5,700 residential units, bringing thousands of new residents to the area. A revised plan was submitted outlining a plan to build 13 towers ranging from 25-42 floors.

While the Town Centre is not only a place for commerce, but the heart of our community with essential community and health services, it has never been owned in whole or in part by our community or City of Toronto.
