The Downsview Lands project is expected to be a transformative 30+ year large scale redevelopment of the Downsview area and consists of 15 districts. With the Downsview Secondary Plan Area taking up 560 hectares of space in total, the project is expected to bring about the following changes: 52 thousand jobs, 63 thousand mixed-use mid to high rise building units and an estimated population of 115 thousand people. Of the aforementioned 15 districts, Canada Lands Company (a federal crown corporation responsible for managing federal-owned lands) is responsible for overseeing 5 of them.
In July, the City of Toronto will be reviewing CLC's Downsview West district proposal. As the City is reviewing this proposal and expected to make a decision, what does this mean for:
- Affordable Housing?
- Local Jobs and Opportunities?
- Apprenticeship and training pathways for local youth?
- Small businesses at the Downsview Merchants Market?
When the Downsview Secondary Plan was approved, the promise was to create more affordable housing, local jobs and support inclusive economic growth. However the current proposal does the opposite and fails to commit to any opportunities for local residents to benefit from the development, meanwhile 50% of the small businesses at the Downsview Merchants Market are expected to be displaced as part of the plan.
The goal of this town hall is to inform the community and local stakeholders of this proposal and the potential impacts this development will have on our community.
Dinner and Refreshments to be provided
